I found this interesting and thought I’d share this link here because they, alongside with the MCP of Manipur, PBSP(MUG) of Bangladesh, and a bunch of organizations from Latin America, continue to uphold Comrade Gonzalo from Peru, which has become a fairly unpopular position to take in Europe and North America, many going so far as to denounce him as a traitor (something I don’t believe is true.)

Reading this sounded like a recitation of all the main documents of the Communist Party of Peru, the talk about CP militarization, the three instruments, people’s war until communism, etc — even the name of the Party “Marxist-Leninist-Maoist, Principally Maoist” is something that the PCP always said.

I don’t know much about this organization.

You post such consistently interesting stuff, comrade. Thank you!

And yeah, this is very PCP-ish. Great stuff!

I’ve been on a bit of a PCP kick lately, and since you seem well versed on the subject… What do you think about the cult of personality that formed around President Gonzalo, and do you think it had anything to do with the Sendero Luminoso’s eventual downfall, after Gonzalo denounced the struggle?

TL;DR: Personality cults are in the main bad but with certain good or “redeeming” qualities.

I’ve talked to comrades in India who described personality cults a “third world thing”. I personally don’t understand them. But I know that personality cults do not change the character of a Party or a revolution, and the people who readily denounce revolutions due to personality cults are 99% of the time silly liberals and not revolutionaries.

Prior to launching the PPW, there was intense two-line struggle within the Communist left in Peru. After defeating no less than four erroneous and non-revolutionary lines, Comrade Gonzalo had basically proven that he was the most outstanding politician and leader within the PCP. And as such, “Mariategui Thought” was replaced by “Gonzalo Thought”

A similar pattern can be found in China, where, after 10 years of Mao’s leadership, and after defeating several incorrect lines, “Marxism-Leninism-Mao Tse-tung Thought” was adopted as the guiding ideology of the CCP in 1945.

The original idea was basically that every revolution produces outstanding leaders and a specific thought, named after the aforementioned leader, which guides the revolution forward in accordance with the concrete conditions of a specific country and in accordance with whatever the ideology of the international proletariat is at that time. If the aforementioned “thought” turns out to have universal application, then it becomes an “ism”.

“Marxism” became “Marxism-Leninism”, “Marxism-Leninism” became “Marxism-Leninism-Maoism”.

As such, in 100 years, if we haven’t already established communism, we’ll have Marxism-Leninism-Maoism-Blahism-Nameism-Racism-etcism. (just kidding! we’ll probably find some creative solution like the “Maoist-Third Worldists” did)

What I’m trying to say is that the intentions of the PCP weren’t really malicious, it’s not like they were necessarily trying to establish some holy aura around Comrade Gonzalo. They simply observed the development of Marxism, and noticed this pattern and thought that it was correct.

I think that cult of personalities are really double-edged swords, though. It’s often revisionists and counter-revolutionaries within Communist Parties who most intensely promote personality cults for their own devious reasons, take for example Khrushchov and Lin Piao.

However, as the book The Unknown Cultural Revolution noted, rural peasant masses would often quote Chairman Mao in their struggle against corrupt and bureaucratic officials, and since Chairman Mao was basically a god-like figure in China at the time it was a really handy tool and these corrupt officials basically had to step down or stop whatever stupid shit they were doing.

The masses also often eagerly rally around an identifiable people’s leader rather than some faceless Central Committee, which is nice for advancing revolutions.

Brian King noted in his article “The U.S. Left and Peru”: “The “cult of personality” around Guzman, while certainly anti-democratic, should be understood in this context as well. During a war, when you might be killed at any time, I believe there is a very strong tendency for people to want to believe that their leader possesses qualities that would make it possible for him or her to steer things toward victory, even if that might seem a too difficult task for a “mere mortal like me.” (Monthly Review, Vol. 45, No. 5, 1993) I think that there’s some truth in this statement.

In Peru, after Comrade Gonzalo’s arrest, peace calls were made in Comrade Gonzalo’s name – I highly doubt he’s actually behind any of that. The Central Committee immediately denounced this peace call and called it a fraud, but revisionists within the Party used it to try and end the PPW.

As for whether or not Comrade Gonzalo’s arrest was a part of the PCP’s downfall, I don’t think so. The PCP had been in some deadlock and unable to advance properly in urban areas outside of the slums, which kind of killed a lot of momentum. I don’t want to make too large of a post, but I think that his arrest did have an effect but it wasn’t entirely because of that event.

So yeah, double-edged sword man, double-edged sword. But all-in-all I think that history shows that personality cults are in the main damaging and something which should be avoided (Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Mazumdar, Gonzalo, etc.)

I know! I commented on your blog on that but it didn’t get auto-approved due to a changed e-mail or something.

Hopefully you can get all of the badass U.S. and Canadian Maoists over here, this is a much easier way to communicate with all of you.

Wow, great response. That more or less gels with what I’ve been thinking about personality cults and how they arise organically out of line struggles, and the way you explained Gonzalo’s makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
